People have worshipped at the Parish Church of St John the Baptist for more than 900 years. The original church, and the nave, is Norman. The building has been extended with aisles added in the 12th and 13th centuries, and the chancel in the 14th century. The Tower was added in the 16th century, and the spire is 17th century.
In more recent times the church has been updated by installing a modern lighting system, repairs to the roof and windows, new central heating, replacing the pews with more flexible seating and building a new toilet and kitchen extension.
This has been achieved through fund-raising and the use of reserves.
In 2016, following a period of substantial fund raising including successful grant applications, repairs totalling over £150,000 to the tower, spire and walls has been completed. A magnificent outcome for a small parish church.
We continue to support the Church of England 'Promoting a Safer Church' which actively underpins all safeguarding work within the church. Please see Safeguarding page for contact details.
St Mary & St Rhadegund
St. Mary and St. Rhadegund is the Parish Church of Whitwell, and has been the centre of worship in the village for over 900 years. The church began as two adjacent chapels which over time merged into one church; hence the unusual dual dedication.
Architecturally this is a fascinating building, with evidence of development over the centuries, and many hours can be spent identifying architectural styles and periods. The church is part of an ancient pilgrim route, and there is a Saxon well (still functioning) less than a couple of hundred yards from the church.
Safeguarding: As a church, we are committed to the protection of vulnerable individuals of all ages, and are concerned to meet all pertinent safeguarding standards. We are pleased to adopt the House of Bishops 'Promoting a Safer Church' Policy.
